10 finalists compete for London Holocaust Memorial design

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Ten architectural teams have been shortlisted for the Holocaust Memorial to be built in London near the Houses of Parliament along the Thames. The competition, launched in 2016, will announce the winner in autumn 2017. Many projects pair architects with contemporary artists. Norman Foster's design features a descending ramp in Victoria Tower Gardens with artist Michal Rovner's intervention inspired by Nazi book burnings. Caruso St. John collaborates with Rachel Whiteread on a transparent sculpture echoing Gothic niches and an underground 'Hall of Voices' for survivor testimonies. Diamond Schmitt Architects works with Dani Karavan on concentric circles evoking deportation trains. Allied Works incorporates prayer and LED lights by Robert Montgomery. Zaha Hadid Architects with Anish Kapoor proposes a spherical void and meditation space with a bronze meteorite. Other finalists include Daniel Libeskind, David Adjaye, Ron Arad, John MacAsian & Mass Design, Lahdelma & Mahlamäki Architects, and David Morley. Heneghan Peng Architects and Sven Anderson design an 'ear' connecting visitors to Holocaust voices.
