1-54 New York 2026 debuts Afro-Brazilian art section
From May 13 to 17, 2026, the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair in New York will introduce a fresh section focused on Afro-Brazilian art. Called '1-54 Presents: Brazil Beyond Brazil', this part is curated by Igor Simões and will highlight the talents of Black Brazilian artists, including Ana Claudia Almeida, Rebeca Carapiá, and Jaime Lauriano. Notable galleries like Almeida & Dale and Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel will participate. This initiative stems from a trip to São Paulo in 2025 with emerging Black collectors and aims to revisit modernist themes while expanding views on Afro-Brazilian art. Additionally, projects like 'Black Forest' by Ekene Ijeoma and 'Entanglements' by TM Arthouse will be featured, alongside over 20 galleries, including newcomers like Aura and Tanya Weddemire Gallery.
