1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair showcases diverse artists and galleries at Somerset House

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

The 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair, held at Somerset House, draws inspiration from Africa's 54 nations to question the perspectives of the Western art market. Curated by Koyo Kouoh, the exhibit features a wide array of artworks beyond just South African pieces, including galleries from Côte d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Mali, alongside Western representatives such as Mikael Andersen, Galleria Continua, and Jack Bell. Andersen presented a solo show of 21 works by South African artist Ernest Mancoba, who passed away in 2002, merging South African and European influences. Magnin-A featured two acrylics by Malian artist Amadou Sanogo and Malick Sidibé's iconic 1963 photograph 'Nuit de Noël.' Additionally, the Museum of Modern Art, Equatorial Guinea showcased a painting by Cyprien Tokoudagba from 2007, with contributions from artists in Tanzania, Senegal, Mali, Angola, and Benin.
