1-1 Architects completes Nagoya office-residence using reclaimed timber from client's warehouses
In 2023, 1-1 Architects finalized a project in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, which serves as both an office and residence for a construction firm with a legacy spanning 50 years. The project, led by Yuki Kamiya and including Yui Goto, creatively utilized a large stock of unused timber from two warehouses owned by the client. This wood comprised excess materials ordered by the previous generation, a carpenter, and reclaimed lumber gathered during various demolitions over the years. The architecture firm collaborated with Komatsu Structural Design for structural engineering and Hirata Construction Co., Ltd. for construction, resulting in a 69-square-meter building. This effort reflects a growing trend in Japan to repurpose dormant timber stockpiles. Takashi Uemura captured the project, featuring products from LIXIL and Miratap, curated by Miwa Negoro, emphasizing resource efficiency in construction.
