WPA Library Services Program's Impact on Book Preservation and Access

The Works Progress Administration, active from 1935 to 1943 during the Great Depression, included a library services initiative that significantly benefited public access to literature. While less documented than construction or art projects, this federal program supported various library improvements. These included establishing rural libraries and community reading spaces, organizing cataloging efforts, and deploying mobile book services. A specific book repair effort during a summer period restored over 210,000 volumes for educational use. The WPA aimed to create jobs while enhancing national infrastructure and cultural resources.
