World War II Bomb Defused in Dresden After Major Evacuation

An unexploded 550-pound bomb from World War II was safely neutralized in Dresden, Germany, after the evacuation of 18,000 residents. The device was discovered on March 10 during reconstruction of the Carola Bridge. Demolition expert Thomas Zowalla led the operation, using a water jet cutter to remove a damaged detonator. This marks one of the largest evacuations in the city's history, involving over 400 emergency personnel. Such discoveries remain common in Germany, where many wartime explosives are still found during construction projects.
