Wilfrido Terrazas releases 'Trilogía del dolor' on New Focus Recordings
Mexican flautist, improviser, and composer Wilfrido Terrazas released the album 'Trilogía del dolor' in February 2025 on New York label New Focus Recordings. The album brings together three works originally conceived independently—'Llevarás el nombre' (2022), 'Pequeña familia' (2023), and 'Ten Thousand Regrets' (2024)—as a meditation on pain at the intersection of music and poetry. Terrazas, a member of the Generación Espontánea collective and the Liminar ensemble, explores trauma, grief, and regret through slow listening and the transformation of wounds into knowledge. The album features eleven movements in dialogue with visual work by Esther Gámez Rubio, with contributions from musicians Miguel Zazueta, Mariana Flores Bucio, Madison Greenstone, Rocío Sánchez, and Camilo Zamudio. 'Llevarás el nombre' sets poems by Nuria Manzur-Wirth to tenor voice and flute, creating a fragile space where silence and breath carry weight. 'Pequeña familia' adds cellist Rocío Sánchez and clarinetist Madison Greenstone, focusing on grief and shared loss. 'Ten Thousand Regrets' explores regret with texts by Ricardo Cázares, Tania Favela, Mónica Morales Rocha, and Nadia Mondragón, adding percussion and soprano voice. In an interview with Brad Rose for Foxy Digitalis, Terrazas stated the project emerged from a difficult period in his life and that as a trauma survivor, he composed these pieces to confront associated shame, conceiving pain as a common human experience.
