Versailles Completes 40-Year Restoration of Louis XVI's Bedroom to 1789 Condition

The Palace of Versailles has completed a decades-long restoration of the King's Private Apartments bedroom to its exact appearance on October 6, 1789, the day the French royal family fled. This meticulous project, ongoing since the 1980s, involved reconstructing the room's elaborate furnishings and textiles using historical techniques and surviving fabric scraps. Architects Jacques V Gabriel and his son Ange-Jacques Gabriel originally designed the space in 1728, with sculptor Jacques Verberckt providing Rocaille embellishments. Restoration craftspeople faced particular challenges with the bed, which had been looted during the French Revolution; they reconstructed it using archival descriptions and spent thousands of hours carving it from linden wood before applying traditional water-gilding. The room features expansive tapestry installations that demonstrate the aesthetic shift from Rococo to Neoclassical, with fabrics originally produced in Lyon that would change seasonally. Versailles notes that returning the bed restores both decorative coherence and the symbolic significance of this sovereign space. The restored bedroom is now open for tours.
