Venice's Rialto Fish Market to Become Cultural Space

The historic Pescherie di Rialto in Venice is set to undergo a transformation into a cultural and scientific space, as announced by Mayor Simone Venturini during a site inspection on August 15, 2026. The project, led by the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia (MUVE), which has owned the Palazzetto delle Pescherie since 2015, aims to repurpose the iconic market building beyond mere preservation. The Pescherie, designed by Cesare Laurenti with architect Domenico Rupolo and inaugurated in 1908, replaced an earlier iron structure from 1881 and has been central to Venice's commercial identity for centuries. In 2024, MUVE included the Pescherie in its planning interventions, preparing a Document of Feasibility of Alternative Designs. By 2025, the foundation had initiated the tender process for the recovery project's design. The mayor's inspection marks a significant step, though no timeline for construction or reopening has been set, as further design and approval phases remain. The envisioned use is not a traditional museum but a cultural venue that connects architecture, market memory, fishing history, and lagoon research, reflecting a broader trend of adaptive reuse of historic sites in Venice.
