Vectorworks Purchases Morpholio to Integrate Mobile Sketching with BIM Software

Vectorworks, a global provider of design and BIM software, has completed the acquisition of mobile application developer Morpholio. This strategic move aims to transform architectural and design workflows by merging Morpholio's sketching and presentation tools with Vectorworks' CAD and BIM platform. The acquisition incorporates Morpholio's mobile apps—Trace, Board, and Journal—into Vectorworks' product offerings. According to company statements, the integration seeks to blend paper-like sketching with advanced building information modeling and computer-aided design capabilities, facilitating smoother transitions between conceptual sketches and detailed documentation. Vectorworks CEO Jason Pletcher emphasized that both companies share a philosophy that software should support, not restrict, creative expression. Morpholio co-founders Toru Hasegawa and Mark Collins described the union as a multidimensional expansion that will combine mobile and desktop strengths, potentially incorporating AI to enhance design processes while preserving creative integrity. The acquisition is noted as being particularly relevant for firms like Diller Scofidio + Renfro, where principal Sean A. Gallagher has utilized Morpholio Trace for over ten years on projects including the Canal Cafe at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale and the Pardee Center of Global Studies at Boston University. Vectorworks indicated that the purchase follows years of collaborative efforts to improve connectivity between Morpholio applications and Vectorworks Cloud Services, with current user experiences remaining unchanged. The companies anticipate that this merger will advance product capabilities and streamline design workflows from initial concepts to final deliverables.
