Uruguay Achieves Near-Total Renewable Electricity Generation Through Wind Power Expansion

Uruguay has transformed its electricity system to become nearly carbon-neutral within a short timeframe. According to the National Energy Directorate, the country generated 98% of its electricity from renewable sources in 2025, with wind power contributing over one-third of this total. This transition was driven by practical necessity rather than ideological shifts. The development represents a significant reduction in dependence on imported fossil fuels.
