Urbino's Historic Cinema Ducale Reopens with Museum Ambitions After Near Closure

The Cinema Ducale in Urbino, Italy, has reopened in April 2026 after facing permanent closure just months earlier. Operating since 1950, this historic venue narrowly escaped shutdown following a diesel leak that forced its temporary closure. Currently only one of its two screening rooms is functional while ceiling safety repairs are completed. The cinema's owners aim to establish a Museum of Cinema to display preserved memorabilia including vintage posters and equipment. A request has been submitted to Italy's Ministry of Culture to designate the venue as a national monument, which would enable funding and the creation of a management foundation. The building originated from the 1930s demolition of the Santa Maria della Torre convent, with construction continuing through World War II using repurposed railway tracks for the roof. The cinema previously served as Urbino's theater before 1980s renovations, hosting performances by Dario Fo in 1979 and Eduardo de Filippo in 1986. Its collection includes posters designed by Mario Logli, historical film catalogs, and original wooden seats. The venue was recognized as a historic cinema and was featured in a 2016 exhibition documenting its 110-year history. Current management remains with Paolo Tomassini and Costantina Di Tizio, continuing a family legacy that began with Antonio Tomassini's operation of the Sala Feltria in the early 20th century.
