University Avenue Bridge: Philly's Neglected Architectural Gem

The University Avenue Bridge in Philadelphia, designed by French-born architect Paul Philippe Cret and completed around 1930, is a prime example of the City Beautiful movement but has fallen into severe disrepair. The drawbridge no longer lifts, bronze doors were stolen in 2024, windows are missing, and saplings grow in masonry seams. Despite its newfound importance as a gateway to the expanding medical district and the Schuylkill River Trail extension, a $50 million restoration is not funded. PennDOT owns the bridge and has contracted for debris removal, but the timeline is uncertain. The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia lists it as a place to save. Architectural historian David Brownlee calls it one of two great bridges in Philadelphia, alongside the Ben Franklin Bridge. Cret, who taught at Penn for over 30 years, designed both. The bridge features an exuberant frieze, seashells, seahorses, and porpoises in bronze, and neoclassical operator's houses. Its last major rehabilitation was in 1985, and its condition is rated 'poor' but safe for legal loads. The city is working with PennDOT on rehabilitating the drawbridge mechanism.
