Uniqlo Opens New York Store in Former Andy Warhol Studio Building

A new Uniqlo store has opened at 860 Broadway in New York, a building that once housed Andy Warhol's studio. The Japanese fashion retailer launched its seventh New York location on April 3, 2026, occupying ground-floor retail space that had been vacant for some time. Warhol used the third floor of this Broadway and East 17th Street address as his Factory from 1974 until 1984. After his departure, the building hosted various businesses, including a nightclub called the Underground in the 1980s and a Petco store from the mid-1990s until 2023. Uniqlo is leveraging the site's artistic history by promoting opening weekend with Warhol-themed merchandise, such as T-shirts and tote bags featuring his 1983 photograph and 1978 print 'Self-Portrait with Skull,' as seen in an Instagram post tagging the Warhol Foundation. The brand has a history of licensing agreements with artists like KAWS, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, as well as collaborations with institutions such as MoMA. The Warhol Foundation, which ended its art authentication activities in 2011, now focuses on licensing, aligning with Warhol's own engagement with commercial culture. It remains unclear if the store extends to the third floor where Warhol's studio was located.
