Uncertain Future for Haut-Buisson Castle in Sarthe Amid Restoration Funding Challenges

The Haut-Buisson castle in Cherré-Au, Sarthe, faces an unclear future as its interior restoration remains stalled due to funding shortages. The municipality of Cherré-Au, with about 2,500 residents, is seeking public input on potential uses for the site, such as a cultural center, luxury hotel, or healthcare facility. Exterior renovations, including roof repairs, structural safety measures, and window restorations, were completed in January 2024 after three years of work, supported by the Fondation du patrimoine, the Principality of Monaco, and the French state, covering half of the €2 million cost. However, the interior is severely deteriorated, with damaged ceilings, floors, and walls, requiring an estimated €4-5 million for restoration. The castle, built in 1847 by the Marquis de Jumilhac, was once a residence for Princess Alice of Monaco (1857–1925) and later served as a plant biology department for the Sorbonne from 1952 until abandonment. Purchased by the commune in 2009 with plans to reopen it to the public, the project aims to preserve original features like stained glass and moldings. The municipality is also renovating outbuildings, including an orangery for event space, and has acquired adjacent properties, hoping to attract private investment to revive the project and develop the 120-hectare estate.
