Two New Bottletail Squid Species Formally Identified in New Zealand Waters

Researchers have officially described two previously unknown species of bottletail squid found in New Zealand's marine environments. The discovery was led by Jae Santos from the Australian Museum in collaboration with the Auckland University of Technology's cephalopod research laboratory. After years of morphological examination and genetic analysis comparing specimens, scientists confirmed the distinctiveness of Sepioloidea jaelae and Sepioloidea virgilioi from the established Sepioloidea pacifica species. The findings were recently published in the journal Marine Biodiversity, advancing understanding of marine biodiversity in the region.
