Tudor-Era Tunnels and Artifacts Unearthed at New Hall School, Henry VIII's Former Estate

Workers repairing a historic ha-ha at New Hall School in Chelmsford, England, discovered arched entrances to brickwork tunnels and a cache of Tudor-era artifacts, including pottery, bones, glass bottles, and lead fragments. The school occupies the Palace of Beaulieu, originally called New Hall, which Henry VIII purchased from Thomas Boleyn in the early 1500s and spent over £17,000 enlarging and decorating. The king renamed it Beaulieu and used it for hunting and meetings through the 1520s. The tunnels date to the Tudor period, when the estate was a royal country house. Sarah Garside, head of history at the school, noted the rarity of such finds in a school setting. The school has hired historians and archaeologists to continue excavating, following a 2009 dig by Oxford Archaeology that uncovered prehistoric pits, a medieval wall, and Tudor chapel foundations. Principal Katherine Jeffrey stated the findings bring history to life. Students Anna and Florian expressed excitement about the tunnels' secrecy and the richness of the school's history. The discovery offers a tangible link to documentary history, with questions remaining about whether the pottery was stored or discarded in the tunnels.
