Trump's DC arch construction threatens precolonial archaeological sites

A report from the National Park Service (NPS) indicates that the 250ft-tall arch proposed by President Donald Trump in Washington, DC, may disrupt archaeological deposits from precolonial times located beneath Memorial Circle. This project necessitates a Section 106 review in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The NPS identifies a moderate to high sensitivity for intact resources lying beneath a landfill layer of 10-14ft, with moorings needing to extend to bedrock at a depth of 75ft. Within a mile, there are thirteen documented sites, including Arlington House. Six preservation organizations have sought consultation but have yet to receive responses from the NPS. A Section 106 meeting is scheduled for June 15. The report advises conducting subsurface studies and highlights the Alexandria Canal as a significant site. Construction would entail 20-hour workdays throughout the year, involving 20-30 trucks making 80-100 trips daily.
