Trapani's Sant'Anna Convent Restored as State Archive Opens to Sea

After nearly four years of renovation, the former Sant'Anna convent in Trapani, Italy, now houses the State Archive of Trapani, which has reopened with new terraces offering views of the sea and the city. The €1.7 million redevelopment, funded by the PNRR and carried out by the Soprintendenza Archivistica della Sicilia, includes new elevators, redesigned pathways, recovered spaces, and a new study hall. The most significant change, however, is the enhanced relationship between conservation and access. The archive holds administrative and notarial acts, historical collections, and documents that trace centuries of civil, economic, and institutional life in the Trapani area. Unlike a museum, history here is entrusted to registers and everyday records, making the improved consultation spaces crucial for enabling the public to engage with this heritage. The new terraces establish a direct visual connection between the documents and the landscape they describe, creating a natural counterpoint between past and present. Angelantonio Orlando, Director General of the Mission Unit for PNRR Implementation at the Ministry of Culture, praised the achievement as part of the broader success of PNRR Investment M1C3-1.2, which has enabled over 700 cultural sites across Italy to improve accessibility and inclusivity. He commended the State Archive of Trapani and the General Directorates for Archives and Museums for their coordination. The archive is located at Via Sant'Anna in Trapani.
