Tiglachin Monument: Ethiopia's Derg-Era Memorial in Addis Ababa

The Tiglachin Monument, also known as the Derg Monument, is a large memorial complex in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Completed in 1984, it commemorates Ethiopian and Cuban soldiers who died in the 1977-78 Ogaden War. The monument was commissioned by the Marxist Derg regime, led by Mengistu Haile Mariam, to mark the 10th anniversary of Emperor Haile Selassie's overthrow. Designed by North Korea's Mansudae Art Studio with advisory input from Soviet architect V. Savchenko, the structure features a 50-foot central pylon, socialist realist statuary, and wall reliefs depicting revolutionary themes. Its style reflects Soviet and North Korean influences, and it remains a prominent, though controversial, landmark representing Ethiopia's communist period.
