Three New Australian Weedfish Species Identified in Scientific Study

Researchers have formally described three previously unknown species of Weedfish found exclusively in temperate Australian waters. The species—Coleman's Weedfish (Heteroclinus colemani), Longtail Weedfish (Heteroclinus longicauda), and Whitley's Weedfish (Heteroclinus whitleyi)—were detailed in a paper published in Zootaxa. These small, camouflaged fish inhabit rocky reefs and seaweed beds from New South Wales to South Australia and Tasmania. The discovery resulted from extensive morphological and genetic analysis, highlighting ongoing biodiversity discoveries in Australian marine environments. The findings were documented by scientists including D.F. Hoese, A.C. Hay, and J.D. DiBattista.
