Three Men Sentenced for Drents Museum Gold Heist, Partially Recovered

A Dutch court has sentenced three men to nearly four years in prison each for the theft of ancient gold artifacts from the Drents Museum in Assen. The heist targeted Iron Age treasures on loan from Romania, including the 5th-century BCE Cotofenesti gold helmet and Dacian spiral bracelets. The burglars broke in by exploding windows and fled before police arrived, causing physical damage. The incident sparked a diplomatic crisis between Romania and the Netherlands over museum security failures. The museum's insurer paid €6.5 million in compensation to Romanian authorities. Two defendants returned the helmet (slightly dented) and two bracelets under a plea deal; the third rejected the deal but was convicted. Romania has not yet decided whether to refund the insurance payout.
