Thieves Steal Bronze Age Treasure from Spanish Museum

In the early hours of the morning, thieves broke into the Museum of Villena in Alicante, Spain, and made off with most of the Treasure of Villena, a collection of 66 objects dating back to around 1000 BC. The heist took just four minutes, with the intruders entering through a window and leaving before 5:24 AM. Local authorities suspect the operation was meticulously planned, noting that a false alarm at a nearby sports center may have served as a distraction. The treasure, discovered in 1963 by archaeologist José María Soler, includes 29 bracelets, 11 bowls, three bottles, and other items made of gold, silver, amber, and iron. Some iron pieces are believed to have been crafted from meteorite material, adding to the collection's scientific significance. The gold alone is valued at an estimated €1.7 million. The collection had been on display in a dedicated room at the new museum since May 2024. Mauro Hernández, an archaeology professor at the University of Alicante, told Cadena SER that the thieves "had everything very well planned." Villena's mayor, Fulgencio Cerdán, expressed devastation, saying, "For us, this destroys everything." Spanish authorities are continuing their search for the stolen artifacts, while the municipality assesses the full extent of the loss.
