The Nez Perce War: A Desperate Flight for Freedom

The Nez Perce War, which took place in 1877, involved a four-month retreat of approximately 800 Nez Perce, led by Chief Joseph, from the Wallowa Mountains in Oregon to Canada, while being pursued by 2,000 U.S. troops commanded by General Oliver Otis Howard. This arduous journey covered over a thousand miles across four states and included twenty battles. The conflict ignited following Howard's ultimatum in May 1877, demanding that non-treaty Nez Perce relocate to the Lapwai Reservation. They ultimately surrendered on October 5, 1877, near the Canadian border, with Chief Joseph famously declaring, "I will fight no more forever." Around 300 Nez Perce fled to Canada, but after their surrender, many were deported to Leavenworth, Kansas, and Indian Territory, resulting in numerous deaths. Chief Joseph passed away on September 21, 1904. Today, the Nez Perce tribe is federally recognized and has over 3,500 members.
