Texas Removes Cesar Chavez Memorials Following Abuse Allegations

In response to allegations of sexual abuse against Cesar Chavez, various Texas communities are erasing his name and image from public areas. Murals in both Austin and El Paso have been covered up, with the Austin mural being in place for 46 years before its removal. Statues, such as one located at the Dallas Farmers Market, were dismantled on March 19. On the same day, Fort Worth eliminated an honorary street name, while San Antonio initiated a survey on March 23 regarding the renaming of Cesar Chavez Boulevard. Annual marches were also canceled, including Corpus Christi's 25th on March 13 and a planned event in Houston. The Cesar E. Chavez Legacy & Educational Foundation ceased operations on March 18, and on April 8, the Dallas City Council voted to replace the March 31 holiday for Chavez with a Dolores Huerta holiday on April 10.
