Teenagers' Protest Leads to Discovery of Roman Villa Beneath Their School

In January 2021, students at Liceo Cavour, a high school near the Colosseum in Rome, occupied their school to protest extended remote learning during Covid-19. During their overnight stay, they discovered a locked door in the basement leading to an ancient Roman villa. Teacher Claudia Marino investigated and found the ruins. She alerted the Special Superintendency of Rome, which began excavations in September 2025. On May 28, 2026, archaeologists presented findings: the domus dates to the mid-second century C.E., featuring frescoes, stucco, a mosaic with large tiles, and floral designs. The villa was partially uncovered in 1895 but forgotten. Graffiti from 1920–1950 and later suggests earlier rediscoveries. Artifacts include an amphora and drinking cups. The villa's location between Carinae and Esquiline Hill was once home to Cicero, Pompey, and Octavian. Excavations filled 48 crates. Researchers identified occupants L. Fabius Gallus and Umbria Albina from inscriptions on lead water pipes. The site is believed to be larger, but further excavation needs funding. Archaeologists hope to open it to students and tourists.
