Taxonomic Collaboration Uncovers Hidden Marine Biodiversity in France

Researchers Dr. Pat Hutchings from Australia and Dr. Nicolas Lavesque from France collaborated to revise the taxonomy of terebellid worms, commonly known as Spaghetti worms, in French waters. Their work, initiated after a 2016 course in Caen organized by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), led to the description of 31 new species and corrected misidentifications, bringing the total known species to 58. The study, published in 2021, revealed that historical references like Fauvel's 1927 work had led to widespread errors, impacting ecological studies and highlighting issues such as the introduction of exotic species like Thelepus japonicus via oyster farming. This effort underscores the importance of cross-continental knowledge transfer in taxonomy to address biodiversity challenges.
