Swedish Study Reveals Long-Term Gut Microbiome Changes from Antibiotic Use

Research published in Nature Medicine on March 11 examined stool samples from 14,979 Swedish adults, finding that antibiotic treatments can alter gut bacterial composition for up to eight years. The study, led by Gabriel Baldanzi and Tove Fall of Uppsala University, showed that even single courses of specific antibiotics like clindamycin, fluoroquinolones, and flucloxacillin reduced bacterial diversity and changed species abundances. While diversity partially recovers within two years, complete restoration may not occur. The findings suggest potential links between antibiotic use and long-term health risks, though applicability to populations outside Sweden requires further investigation.
