Study Reveals Widespread PFAS Contamination Across Diverse Whale and Dolphin Species

Recent research demonstrates that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), synthetic chemicals known as 'forever chemicals,' now contaminate a broader array of whale and dolphin species than previously documented. The study, analyzing liver samples from 127 stranded individuals across 16 species in New Zealand waters, found that habitat is a minor predictor of contamination levels. Instead, biological factors like age and sex are stronger indicators, with older, larger animals and males showing higher accumulations. The findings indicate these persistent pollutants have permeated all layers of the marine food web, from coastal dolphins to deep-diving whales, raising concerns about health impacts on vulnerable species and ecosystem resilience.
