Stoke-on-Trent Declares Heritage Emergency to Save Ceramics Industry Landmarks

The city council of Stoke-on-Trent has announced a "heritage emergency," urgently requesting £325 million for the restoration of historic industrial structures tied to its ceramics legacy. The Staffordshire Potteries, which includes renowned names like Wedgwood, Spode, and Royal Doulton, has 16 significant sites at risk, with the Chatterley Whitfield colliery alone requiring £150 million. Out of more than 275 listed buildings, only 47 of the original 2,000 bottle ovens remain. The appeal is directed towards both government and private investors. Jon Rouse, the council's chief executive, highlighted that the city's centenary in 2025 enhances its visibility. Notable restoration projects include the Spode factory and Middleport Pottery, with future developments planned for a music venue and transforming Hanley Town Hall into an apartment-hotel.
