Spanish Museums on Alert After Wave of Gold Thefts

A series of brazen gold thefts from Spanish museums has prompted the Ministry of Culture to review security protocols. The most recent incident occurred on August 27, when three individuals broke into the Villena Museum (MUVI) in Alicante and stole the Treasure of Villena, one of the most important Bronze Age collections in the western Mediterranean. This followed the April 25 theft of 144 coins from the Treasure of Villanueva at the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Badajoz, and a July 27-28 night heist in which four hooded individuals stole over 200 gold coins from the Museum of Albacete in just one minute. In response, historians, cultural managers, and criminology experts are calling for increased staffing, thorough reviews, and specialized training for museum security. The Ministry of Culture is now revisiting protocols across the country to prevent further incidents.
