Spanish Government Delays Threaten Xacobeo 2027 Cultural Event Planning

The Spanish government's delays in establishing fiscal incentives are jeopardizing preparations for Xacobeo 2027, a major cultural and tourism event centered on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. The Galician regional government (Xunta) sent a formal letter on Friday to the State Secretary of Culture, Jordi Martí Grau, expressing concern over an eight-month delay in forming the Interadministrative Commission needed to approve activity programs and activate tax benefits for corporate sponsors. This commission is essential for enabling private funding for the Holy Year celebration. The issue originated in June 2024 when the Jacobean Council recommended designating Xacobeo 2027 as an Event of Exceptional Public Interest in the state budget, which would allow tax deductions for corporate contributions. However, the government's failure to pass budgets forced alternative procedures. Although the event was listed as of special interest in the official state bulletin in July 2025, this alone doesn't activate the deductions. Required steps still pending include approving exemption regulations, validating official imagery, and formally constituting the commission through an inter-administrative agreement. Galician tourism officials note they've submitted all required documentation promptly, including logo proposals and tax exemption drafts provided to the Ministry since November, with no progress since. The regional government attempted to resolve the situation through meetings before resorting to the formal complaint. The delays create uncertainty among potential sponsors and compromise project planning for an event that requires years of advance preparation. The previous Xacobeo edition (2021-2022) set records with over 700,000 pilgrims, 6.5 million travelers, and 12.5 million overnight stays, making it a significant economic and cultural driver for Galicia and Spain internationally.
