Sofia Coppola Announces 'Marie Antoinette' 20th Anniversary Book, Exhibition, and Documentary

Sofia Coppola is celebrating the 20th anniversary of her film 'Marie Antoinette' with a multi-faceted program. A book titled 'Making Marie Antoinette' will be published this September under her Important Flowers imprint via MACK. Compiled by Andrew Durham, it features his on-set photography, an oral history by Keaton Bell (originally on Vogue.com in 2021) updated with perspectives from artists like Olivia Rodrigo and PinkPantheress, and a conversation between Coppola and Durham. A documentary, 'Making Marie Antoinette by Eleanor Coppola,' edited from over 80 hours of behind-the-scenes footage shot by her late mother, will premiere this fall. Sony will re-release a fully restored version of the film in the US on October 2, with Park Circus handling UK/Ireland and Pathé handling France in November. From September 22, 2026 to January 24, 2027, the Petit Trianon at the Château de Versailles will host an exhibition exploring the film's process and aesthetics, sponsored by Cartier. Coppola reflects on the film's initial polarizing reception, noting that all negative reviews were written by men, and its enduring appeal among young women, gay men, and TikTok users.
