Smithsonian Magazine Releases Interactive Map of 250 U.S. Sites for Nation's 250th Anniversary

Smithsonian magazine has published an interactive map featuring 250 locations across the United States to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary. Inspired by Alexis de Tocqueville's 19th-century travels, the project was developed over nearly two years by editorial staff including Megan Gambino, Ellen Wexler, and Brian Wolly. The map organizes sites into ten thematic categories such as 'Witness to History,' 'Natural World,' and 'Culture and Community,' aiming to represent geographic diversity and various aspects of American identity. While not all sites evoke positive emotions, each was selected for its significance in capturing elements worth celebrating about the country. The digital feature was released on February 2, 2026, and includes at least two locations from every state plus Puerto Rico.
