The plot centers on Beatrice Fiorìca, who suspects her husband of an affair with Nina Ciampa, the young wife of Dr. Ciampa. Assisted by police delegate Spanò, Beatrice devises a trap to expose the alleged infidelity publicly. Ciampa, portrayed by Orlando, becomes aware of the scheme and attempts to dissuade Beatrice, employing a metaphor about three strings in one's head: the serious, the civil, and the mad. He argues that the civil string is necessary for communal life, urging her to avoid scandal. The entire town becomes involved in the suspicions and planned confrontation.
