Seashore Trolley Museum Seeks Volunteers Through March Open Houses

The Seashore Trolley Museum, recognized as the world's premier electric railway museum, is organizing open house events to recruit new volunteers. These sessions will take place on March 19 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and March 21 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the museum's location on 195 Log Cabin Road in Kennebunkport. The institution is seeking assistance for both seasonal positions and year-round roles in preparation for its 2026 operations. During the March 19 event, specific needs include machinists and welders for trolley restoration projects requiring 2-10 hours monthly, docents for model railroad exhibits, and individuals to work on library and archives projects aimed at improving public access to collections. The March 21 open house will feature representatives from all museum departments recruiting for various positions such as trolley conductors and operators, model railroad exhibit staff including greeters, tour guides, and maintenance personnel, restoration specialists for transit vehicles, event support staff for occasions like Christmas Prelude and Dino Trolley, infrastructure maintenance workers for track and overhead wire systems, facilities and grounds caretakers, library and archives assistants, planning committee members, and pump car operators. One particularly sought-after role involves conductors and operators who run preserved trolleys on the museum's heritage railway for public enjoyment. Prospective volunteers for these positions must be museum members, at least 18 years old, and possess a valid driver's license from their state. Training for new conductors begins with observation sessions on Tuesdays or Saturdays in May and June, where novices are paired with experienced instructors to learn museum history, collection details, guest boarding procedures, and railway operations. Following successful observation, volunteers can progress to operating trolleys under supervision.
