Scientific Research Reveals Sydney Funnel-web Spider Comprises Three Distinct Species
An international research team has reclassified the Sydney Funnel-web spider, previously known as Atrax robustus, into three separate species. The study, conducted by scientists from the Leibniz Institute for the Analysis of Biodiversity Change, Australian Museum, University of Sydney, and Flinders University, used genetic sequencing and morphological analysis to identify Atrax robustus, Atrax montanus, and the newly named Atrax christenseni. This taxonomic revision may improve antivenom development and highlights conservation concerns due to habitat loss and potential illegal trafficking. The research was published in 2025 with support from National Geographic Society and German Science Foundation.
