Saxony-Anhalt Museums Deploy Emergency Boxes to Protect Collections

In Saxony-Anhalt, museums, libraries, and archives are implementing emergency boxes designed as first-aid kits for cultural heritage. According to Marc Holly, the head of the Advisory Office for Collection Preservation Saxony-Anhalt, these kits contain essential materials to mitigate damage until expert assistance is available. Presently, 23% of the region's museums possess these resources. The kits come equipped with protective sheeting to safeguard items from water damage. Prices for complete sets range from several hundred to 4,000 euros. Emergency networks are established in Magdeburg, Halle, the Harz district, Merseburg, and Stendal. A survey conducted in 2024 revealed that 35% of museums faced damage over the last ten years. The Stiftung Händel-Haus intends to purchase emergency boxes for five buildings, totaling 5,680 euros, as part of an 18-month emergency preparedness initiative set to commence in summer 2026.
