Saint-Brieuc Cathedral Completes Extensive Restoration After Multi-Year Project

The cathedral in Saint-Brieuc, Brittany, has concluded a major restoration initiative that began in 2009. Led by architect Christophe Amiot, the comprehensive project addressed structural vulnerabilities caused by centuries of moisture infiltration, stemming from the building's 13th-century construction near former marshland. Initial interior restoration, funded with 5 million euros from the state, was completed by 2020. This phase involved repairing deteriorated stonework, plaster, pavements, vaults, and columns. The transept, apse, nave with its side aisles, and wall paintings in the axial chapel were all refurbished. A significant aspect involved removing 19th-century cement joints that trapped moisture and restoring the underlying polychrome plaster, resulting in a brighter interior with soft ochre tones. From 2022 onward, exterior facades were sequentially renovated, focusing on masonry. This 2.6 million euro phase was largely financed by the France Relance recovery plan. Work included cleaning facades and both bell towers, repointing with lime mortar, and replacing damaged stones to prevent water ingress. Concurrent updates were made to electrical systems and fire safety equipment. Additional interior projects followed, such as restoring the sacristy, creating a welcome area, and renovating the western massif with its belfries. The scaffolding was removed nearly a year ago, with final worker activity ending in February. The cathedral, notable for its distinctive defensive towers as one of Brittany's few fortified churches, has now regained its full splendor.
