Russian Drone Strike Damages Kyiv Pechersk Lavra and Kharkiv Art Museum

On June 15, 2026, Russia launched 70 missiles and 611 drones across Ukraine, targeting Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Kyiv. The Ukrainian Air Force intercepted 50 missiles and 582 drones, but at least 11 people died and 50 were injured. Cultural sites sustained damage, including the Kharkiv Art Museum and Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. A missile hit the 121-year-old Kharkiv Art Museum, designed by architect Oleksiy Beketov, injuring five people including a 1-year-old child and a 62-year-old woman. The museum holds 25,000 works of Ukrainian, Russian, and Western European art; its most valuable artworks had been evacuated, but journalists, emergency responders, and Kharkiv's mayor saved remaining paintings. The roof and attic are gone. Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a 975-year-old monastery and UNESCO World Heritage Site, was struck by a Geran-2 drone on the altar part of the Assumption Cathedral, burning over 8,600 square feet of its roof. The nearby Ivan Kushchnyk Tower also sustained damage. No casualties were reported at the monastery; critical relics were evacuated. This is the second attack on the Lavra since 2022, the first since World War II. Russia denied responsibility, blaming faulty Ukrainian artillery, but remains of Shahed-style drones were found nearby. President Zelenskyy affirmed the Lavra will be restored. French Minister Jean-Noël Barrot compared the attack to the Notre-Dame bombing.
