Roundabout Theatre Company Reopens Renovated Todd Haimes Theatre on Broadway

The Todd Haimes Theatre, a Broadway venue operated by Roundabout Theatre Company, reopened on March 26 following a $24 million renovation. The theater, previously called the American Airlines Theatre, was renamed in 2024 to honor Todd Haimes, the organization's late CEO and artistic director who led the company for four decades. The reopening featured a preview performance of Noël Coward's play 'Fallen Angels,' with its official opening scheduled for April 19 and a run through June 7. The renovation project, which lasted six months, was led by design firm Allied Works, with Fred Basch Architect serving as architect of record and Promethean Builders as construction supervisor. Key improvements include restoration of the neo-Renaissance interior, installation of a new digital marquee with blade design, updates to critical building systems like HVAC and electrical, and renovations to restrooms and dressing rooms. Accessibility was enhanced with five additional accessible seats and a new induction loop system for hearing aid users. The third floor was converted into a flexible space for artistic, educational, and community programs. Government funding supported the project, with $10.9 million from New York City agencies and $3 million from state entities including Empire State Development and the New York State Council on the Arts. State senator Liz Krueger praised the renovation for advancing Haimes' legacy and serving over 400,000 people annually. The theater originally opened in 1918 as the Selwyn Theatre and underwent a major restoration in 2000 before its previous renaming. Roundabout Theatre Company operates five venues, including Studio 54 and the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Interim artistic director Scott Ellis highlighted Haimes' role in growing the company from humble beginnings to Broadway prominence.
