Research Reveals Hidden Diversity of Flightless Mammals in Papua New Guinea's Mount Wilhelm

An international research project has uncovered previously unknown species of flightless mammals in Papua New Guinea's Mount Wilhelm region. PhD candidate František Vejmělka conducted fieldwork in 2019, collecting hundreds of specimens along the mountain's elevational gradient. Genetic analysis at France's Institute of Evolutionary Science revealed that morphological identification alone significantly underestimates species diversity, with elevation playing a key role in speciation. The research continues at the Australian Museum Research Institute, where scientists are examining overlooked morphological features of newly identified species. This work aims to document biodiversity and support conservation efforts in the region against threats like mining and logging.
