Research Develops New Forensic Method Using Lizard Odor Profiles to Combat Wildlife Trafficking

Dr. Amber Brown led a research team including supervisors Dr. Greta Frankham, Dr. Maiken Ueland, and Dr. Barbara Stuart in studying Shingleback lizard odor profiles across their Australian habitat range. The research analyzed biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) emitted by the lizards to develop a detection method for identifying illegally trafficked specimens. The study examined lizards across eleven habitat types spanning over one million square kilometers, finding 44 compounds common to all habitats that could serve as detection targets. This work establishes a foundation for using volatilome analysis in wildlife forensic science to improve detection of smuggled animals and inform conservation policies.
