Rembrandt's Early Business Ventures Discovered Under 'The Night Watch' Painting

Conservation work on Rembrandt van Rijn's 1642 masterpiece 'The Night Watch' has revealed previously unknown personal documents beneath the painting's surface. Researchers at Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum discovered a handwritten list of unconventional business concepts that the artist considered before fully committing to his artistic career. Using macro X-ray fluorescence scanning technology, conservators identified various entrepreneurial ideas Rembrandt contemplated, including establishing a psychiatric facility specifically for painters suffering from material poisoning, offering face-painting services at children's parties, operating an umbrella repair shop, creating high-end combs from fishbones, breeding hybrid dog-goat pets, and specializing in foot portraiture. The document appears to date from around 1625 when Rembrandt established his first studio at age 19. Research team member Snacko Gibbetz confirmed the handwriting matches Rembrandt's distinctive style and that the list was created using red chalk, a material the artist frequently employed for drawing. Museum officials expressed surprise at finding these mundane commercial considerations beneath one of art history's most celebrated works, particularly given the Dutch Golden Age's reputation for sophisticated commerce and maritime success. The discovery occurred during 'Operation Night Watch,' the Rijksmuseum's ongoing conservation initiative for the painting. This finding provides new insight into Rembrandt's early career uncertainties and alternative vocational considerations before he achieved lasting fame as a painter.
