Porto's Cultural Renaissance and the Modern Revival of Port Wine

Porto, Portugal's second city, is undergoing a cultural renaissance, balancing its historic heritage with contemporary creativity. The city's steep cobbled streets now host contemporary galleries and modern restaurants in historic buildings. Central to this revival is Port wine, traditionally associated with older generations but now being rediscovered by younger consumers as a versatile drink, especially when served cold with tonic. Cockburn's, founded in 1815 by Scottish brothers Robert and John Cockburn, has been a key innovator, launching Special Reserve in 1969 and reviving the Touriga Nacional grape. The Symington family, current owners of Cockburn's and Graham's, created a range of Ports for mixed serves: Ruby Soho, Tawny Eyes, and White Heights. They also opened Matriarca Townhouse, a restaurant, wine shop, and cocktail bar designed by Thurstan. In June, Cockburn's partnered with Primavera Sound Porto festival, offering Port and Tonic on tap. The city's old-school charm and modern vibrancy coexist seamlessly, making Porto a compelling destination.
