Pirate-Era Shipwrecks Discovered in Bahamas Harbour

cultural-heritage · 2026-06-05

During the inaugural underwater archaeological expedition in Nassau Harbour, Bahamas, six shipwrecks were uncovered, including three from the late 1600s and early 1700s, a period known for piracy. The team, led by the New Providence Pirates Expedition in collaboration with the Bahamas' Antiquities, Monuments and Museum Corporation, was granted the first official permit to explore piracy-related sites. Artifacts recovered include clay tobacco pipes, iron cannons, lead musket balls, and a swivel gun. Notably, a charred wooden hull may belong to Henry Every's ship, the Fancy, which was involved in the 1695 assault on the Grand Mughal fleet. Another wreck revealed 143 decorated clay pipes, likely from a 1740s voyage. The endeavor aims to document submerged heritage and preserve artifacts for the Bahamas. Discoveries will be showcased in Wreckwatch TV and Wreckwatch Magazine.
