Pioneers of Photography in France: Daguerre to Duchenne

In 1839, the French government acknowledged photography by granting an annuity to Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre for his invention of the daguerreotype. The earliest known photograph was created by Nicéphore Niépce in 1826, requiring an eight-hour exposure. By 1835, Niépce and Daguerre had developed the first daguerreotype. Gustave Le Gray, born in 1820, advanced seascape photography through negative combinations and served Napoleon III. In the 1850s, Charles Marville, whose real name was Charles-François Bossu, chronicled Paris's transformation under Baron Haussmann. Eugène Cuvelier, associated with the Barbizon School, photographed forest landscapes inspired by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. Édouard-Denis Baldus captured French architecture, including the Musée du Louvre in 1855, while Nadar, born Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, gained fame as a portrait photographer. Duchenne de Boulogne utilized photography for scientific studies on facial expressions, culminating in an 1862 treatise.
