Piet Zwart's 1938 Bruynzeelkeuken: A Timeless Dutch Design in Museum and Home

Pauline Broekema's column for Museumtijdschrift examines Piet Zwart's 1938 Bruynzeelkeuken, a modular kitchen design representing Dutch functionalist tradition. The kitchen appears both in Kunstmuseum Den Haag's permanent collection and in the apartment of Broekema's friend Henriette, who acquired it ten years ago when purchasing her 1956 flat designed by architect Willem Dudok. Zwart's forward-thinking 1928 vision in Het Vaderland newspaper predicted homes evolving into efficient spaces maximizing comfort and hygiene. The kitchen's modular components allow adaptation to any dwelling, with practical details including a towel slot under the sink, openings for tea towels, and characteristic wooden rods. Born in Zaandijk in 1885, Zwart studied for five years at Amsterdam's Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid, housed in the Rijksmuseum attic, learning drawing, painting, batik, metalwork, weaving and woodworking under teachers including Austrian painter Georg Sturm. His diverse oeuvre includes advertisements for Nederlandse Kabelfabriek, breakfast service designs with H.P. Berlage for Helene Kröller-Müller, photomontages for Anton de Kom's book Wij slaven van Suriname, and friendships with Dadaist Kurt Schwitters. Henriette particularly admires the kitchen's ingenious storage ladder with shelves for spices that fits perfectly into door recesses.
