Persephone Books' Grey Covers and Endpapers: A Design Philosophy

Persephone Books, an independent publisher founded in 1999 by Nicola Beauman, is known for its distinctive dove-grey covers and unique endpapers. The grey color was borrowed from Dean & DeLuca coffee cups in Manhattan. The publisher focuses on neglected fiction and non-fiction by mid-twentieth-century women writers, having published 153 books. Initially releasing twelve books a year, they now publish two annually to give each author proper attention. The endpapers are individual to each book, often sourced from vintage textiles, dresses, or archives like the V&A. They celebrate neglected female textile designers. Examples include endpapers from Beauman's own dresses for 'The Closed Door' and 'Every Good Deed', a jacquard scarf for 'To Bed With Grand Music', and a rug from Nicola Beauman's laundry basket for 'The Oppermanns'. The upcoming October release 'Her Son's Wife' by Dorothy Canfield Fisher will feature a fabric called 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'. MD Francesca Beauman emphasizes that the uniform covers treat readers with respect, allowing them to judge the book by its content.
