Pennsylvania Restores Arts Funding for Small Organizations

The Pennsylvania Creative Industries (PCI), previously known as the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, has changed its stance on funding for small arts organizations. Previously, PCI had deemed organizations with budgets below $100,000 ineligible for grants. Following advocacy from individuals such as Patricia Wilson Aden and Eric César Morales, PCI introduced the Spotlight program, which provides funding for organizations with budgets ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 and permits fiscal sponsorships. Nonetheless, PCI has discontinued the regional partnerships program and specific initiatives like Traditional and Folk Arts. Critics contend that the centralized application process may lead to inefficiencies. Pennsylvania's current arts budget stands at $9.59 million, a decrease from $15 million two decades ago, placing the state 34th in the nation. Advocates are pushing for an increase to $15 million.
